Before the month ends, it is my honour and great pleasure to announce the winner of the frog competition. I don't know what Kiki22 was on at the time, but her poetic skills certainly kick a*s.

Es ist schon ein Weilchen her, als ich Euch einen Frosch im Tausch gegen eine Spruch angeboten habe. Nun ist der Termin schon längst verstrichen, die Jüry hat getagt und ich sollte doch den berühmten Umschlag aufmachen und endlich verraten, wer den Frosch gewonnen hat. Kiki22 hatte uns spontan dieses inspirierte Gedicht gezaubert:

Here's what she had to say:

Two wee crocheted froggies, lounging on a rod,
saw a tasty morsel, their sad heads began to nod.
said the green frog to the other
(who despite it's looks, was not his mother)
"she's left us here, tied to this pole with not so much a titbit
we could have a yummy feast.....if only we could ribbit!" (frogging - geddit?)

All her own work, apparently. Truely inspired. One little froggie goes to the lady with the muse.

As a consolation prize for everyone else, here's a lovely little story about crazypants knitting. (Well I never - an anchor cosy! Who comes up with these ideas?!?)

Die Woolly Walk Along ist ein 75 meter lange gestricktes und gehäkeltes Graffiti, eingesendet von begeisterten Stricker und Häkler aus der ganzen Welt und gestern angebracht von einem Team um Knitty Graffity herum. Ich bekomme eine richtige Gänsehaut, wenn ich die Bilder dieser riesigen Gemeinschaftsaktion sehe, nicht nur weil ich einen Meter dazu begetragen habe.

I'm so honoured to have been a part of Knitty Graffity's Woolly Walk Along. All the photos of this amazing joint effort can be seen here. I seriously get goosebumps looking at the 75 meters (!) that ultimately came together from knitters and crocheters all over the world after the months of anticipation - I guess I'm funny like that when it comes to wool. Strickbombe's contribution was one meter of rugby field, complete with a kiwi rugby team.

There's been a lot of action on the river recently, which brought my attention to these two guys. I like to think that they are having a bit of a Statler & Waldorf moment, but what are they talking about? The dreadful weather? The lousy economy? The poor water quality? Or the epidemic spread of pointless woolly graffiti?! Maybe you have an idea...

A third frog needs to be released into a caring environment (it wasn't keen on this spot for some reason), so tell me what you think they're discussing by September 12 by entering your comment below or via ravelry, and this crocheted critter will go to the writer of the "best" (wittiest, most whimsical or profound) comment. The judge's decision is final!

Es war in letzter Zeit sehr viel am und im Wasser los, da war es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis diese beiden am Ufer auftauchen. Ich stelle mir vor, sie unterhalten sich im Statler & Waldorf Stil, aber worüber? Das erbärmliche Wetter? Die miserabele Wirtschaft? Die schlechte Wasserqualität? Die seuchenartige Verbreitung von nutzlosen Strick-Graffitis?! Vielleicht hast Du eine Ahnung...

Einen dritten Frosch sucht nämlich eine bekömmlichere Umgebung (aus irgendein Grund gefällt's ihn hier nicht). Steck diese beiden bis zum 12. September die passenden Wörter in den Mund (einfach ein Kommentar zu diesem Blog-Post oder über ravelry abgeben) und Du könntest diesen gehäkelten Frosch sehr glücklich machen. I'm not the first* and I won't be the last person to do this....

I said I would and I did! The city's first crocheted/knitted CSD/disco/lichen bike (as far as I know).

Andere* sind vor mir diesen Weg gegangen, und weitere werden's bestimmt nach mir machen. Vielleicht ist es aber das erste gehäkelte und bestrickte CSD-/Disco-/Flechtenartige Fahrrad (zumindestens in dieser Stadt).

Ich arbeite zur Zeit an einer gemeinsamen Strick-Graffiti-Aktion mit Gleichgesinnten aus der ganzen Welt. "The Woolly Walk Along" wurde von Knitty Graffity aus Neuseeland ins Leben gerufen - das Geländer am Pier in Devonport, Neuseeland soll zum Rugby Weltmeisterschaft im Herbst verstrickt und verhäkelt werden. Knitty Graffity berichtet über die Stücke, die bereits eingetroffen und in Arbeit sind; später wird die Aktion von einem Fernseh-Team begleitet.

Wer Lust hat, sich zu beteiligen, meldet sich bei knittygraffityathotmaildotcom für weitere Details (Dimensionen, Einsendeschluss usw.). Jeder Zentimeter zählt! Wer möchte, kann mir fertige Stücke senden und ich verschicke alles zusammen.

I'm currently working on a joint Yarnbombing event with other knitters and crocheters from around the world. "The Woolly Walk Along" was set up by Knitty Graffity from New Zealand - she has planned on covering the handrail along the Devonport pier with contributions from like-minded yarn lovers to tie in with the Rugby World Cup in Autumn. Knitty Graffity has already reported on some of the finished pieces she's been sent and others that are currently 'Works in Progress'; the project will also be the subject of a TV documentary.

Es verschwinden schon die ersten Buchstaben von der Brücke. Andere sind durch den Regen einfach zu gross für die Laternenpfähle geworden. Wenn Du also Interesse hast, einen Buchstaben ein neues Zuhause zu geben, sag Bescheid. Er wird fachmännisch abmontiert und bei Bedarf und nach Möglichkeit dort neu angebracht.

"Ich kaufe ein E" muss niemand sagen - die Dinge gibt's für lau!

Alle Buchstaben waren innerhalb von 2 Wochen abgerissen oder abgebrannt. Hier gibt's leider nix mehr zu holen. Hier gibt's höchstens einen gehäkelt Frosch zu gewinnen (bis zum 15. September).

Double rainbow bridge*

* Double rainbow bridge is a shameless reference to last year's internet sensation Double Rainbow Guy. No need to sob when you see this double rainbow though - a smile (Lächeln) will do.

*Letztes Jahr hat die Welt Double Rainbow Guy kennen gelernt. Es ist klar, woran die Form dieser Brücke, die ich oft überquere, mich erinnert. Nun gibt's also eine gehäkelte Doppelt-Regenbogen-Botschaft.

This statue is dedicated to the 7th Ulanen Regiment, who valiantly defended us against the French in 1870. These days, our French neighbours are mostly harmless, so the needles came out in defence of all that is woolly. The colours are those of the city's football club. And yes, that statue is over 4 metres high.

Statt den Blick zum Boden zu senken seid Ihr diesmal aufgefordert, nach oben zu schauen. Über 4 meter nach oben. Ihr kennt vielleicht das Denkmal zur Erinnerungn an die treue Wacht des 7. Ulanenregiments von 1870. Da die Gefahr aus Frankreich großenteils gebannt ist, ist klar dass das Wollige (ja, in den Farben des 1. FCS) höchstens zur Abwehr gegen der Kälte geeignet ist.

Lowly worm's evil cousin was cramping Hermione's style, so she moved back in with Victor. Seeing as he appears to have lost a leg, he's glad of the live-in help.

Seit Neustem fühlt sich Hermione etwas eingeengt. Auf ihrer Strassenseite hatte sich etwas grünes ausgebreitet. Sie ist also zum Victor zurück gezogen. Da er kürzlich ein Bein verloren hat, ist er besonders dankbar um die Hilfe. Und die Gesellschaft.

Nachdem einige der letzten Strickbomben sehr schnell verschwunden sind, hoffe ich das diese hier die Füße eine Weile lang still hält. (Der Müll wird dafür schon morgen weg sein.)

I did think about using it as a scarf, but the bike stand's needs were far greater than mine.

Ich hatte kurz überlegt, die Strickbombe als Schal zu behalten, aber der Fahrradständer war irgendwie bedürftiger.

So who remembers Lowly Worm? These guys would appear to be related. Anyways, Lowly Worm was always turning up in the various Richard Scarry books. You sometimes had to look closely to find him, because he mightn't be where you were expecting him. So keep your eyes peeled - this story isn't over yet.

Kennt jemand Lowly Worm? Bestimmt sind diese beiden verwandt. Auf jeden Fall tauchte Lowly Worm in mehreren Bücher von Richard Scarry immer wieder auf. Manchmal musste man etwas genauer hinschauen, um ihn zu finden, weil er sich an unerwarteten Stellen aufgehalten hat. Also: Augen auf - die Geschichte geht weiter.

While many species of previously common birds would appear to be endangered, this feathered family seems to be doing quite well for itself. Even though they're pretty far-flung, you can still tell they're related - they've all got the same blue eyes. Pidg here has found a desres in London. Während Vögel, die früher selbstverständlich teil unserer Landschaft waren, anscheinend bedroht sind, scheint sich diese gefiederte Familie gut durch zu setzen. Obwohl sie so weit verstreut sind, erkennt mann eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit - sie haben alle die gleichen blauen Augen. Pidg hat zum Beispiel eine angemessene Unterkunft in London gefunden.Franzi lives in Bavaria - very cosy. Franzi hat's sehr gemütlich in Bayern - Grüß Gott!Franzi's twin brother, Francesco, is hanging out in Tuscany at the moment. You still there? Franzi's Zwillingsbruder Francesco hängt in der Toskana ab. Bist du überhaupt noch da?Other members of the family (Oskar, Keith and Herman) made it just over the border to France where their political opinions are more accepted.Andere Familienmitglieder (Oskar, Keith und Herman) haben sich gerade über die Grenze nach Frankreich niedergelassen - dort werden ihre politischen Ansichten eher akzeptiert.It's very pretty here, which is why (a) this branch of the family gets more photo space in the photo album and (b) they're enjoying the sunset. Und dann gibt's ja natürlich immer ein Nesthäckchen, das es nie weit von Zuhause schaffen (will) - hauptsächlich wegen des leckeren Essens. Have you ever encountered someone who goes so far out of their way to give you the feeling, you're their biggest (only) priority? A person who says, they're just doing their job, even though you know they're going the extra mile? I did recently and needed to say thank you in my own woolly way.Manchmal hat man das Vergnügen, eine Person zu treffen, die anscheinend keine Mühe scheut, einem eine Last abzunehmen, auch wenn sie sagt, es gehöre zum Service. Eher eine Seltenheit, glaube ich. Ich hatte neulich das Glück, so eine Person kennenzulernen, die mich wunderbar entlasten konnte - mehr als in Ausübung ihrer Pflicht nötig gewesen wäre - und so hatte ich das Bedürfnis, mich bei Frau A.A. von der Fa. M in SW auf flauschige Art und Weise zu bedanken.

SOS - Save our Strickbombe

So how do you occupy yourself on a cruise to Norway when the weather's abmissal? Going to the buffet for the eleventy hundredth time is always an option, knitting in public too, but I also had a bit of secret knitting on hand. And then I got some very fresh air wandering around the ship to find the appropriate spot to tag. Unfortunately, the Captain didn't seem to approve - it was gone by the morning.Was gibt's zu tun auf einer langen Kreuzfahrt nach Norwegen bei bescheidenem Wetter ausser zum zigten Mal sich am Buffet an zu stellen? Stricken natürlich! Nach mehreren Tagen öffentlichen Strickens habe ich auch was Geheimes gestrickt. Und dann war Sport angesagt - mehrere Runden um's Schiff, um die richtige Stelle zu finden. Hat den Kapitän wohl nicht gefallen, da der Rettungsring am nächsten Morgen schon weg war...

Non-toxic German pirate

I was yarn bombing a little further afield last week....

I had already left the country armed with the tag and waited to find the right recipient. Anyone know where I've been? I know it looks a little like a 'haz chem' sign (which is all down to the colours of the German flag), but my pirate flag is actually quite friendly.
Diese Woche wurde etwas weiter weg 'gestrickbombt'. Die Bombe wurde fertig gestrickt eingepackt und musste dann nur auf das richtige Ziel warten. Meine Deutsche Piraten-Flagge sieht fast aus wie ein Gefahrensymbol aber ist eigentlich ganz ungefährlich. Deutlich friedlicher als die 'Piraten der Karibik'.

Spring is springing / Der Lenz, ist er da?

Now that the Vernal Equinox has been and gone (it was nearly rained off!) and it's officially Spring, I felt a little woolly encouragement was called for to help the new season along.
Die Frühjahrssonnenwende war verregnet, daher fand ich, ein bisschen wollige Unterstützung wäre nicht fehl am Platz.
Now all we need to do is park those cars in the right colour-coordinated order...
Es fehlt nur noch, dass die Autos da unten nach Farben geparkt werden...Let's see how long the 36 crocheted flowers will be allowed to blossom.
Mal sehen, wie lange die 36 gehäkelten Blumen blühen dürfen.

Talking of longevity, all the other tags were still where I had put them. All of them except one. This Valentine's yarn bomb has been carefully removed from it's lamp post infront of the shop and been given a new, safer and drier home in the shop window! I know that not all yarn bombs are treated with such respect (are they Knitty Graffity?) so I felt quite honoured.

Apropos Langlebigkeit: alle anderen Strickbomben sind immer noch fest genäht. Alle bis auf diese, die sorgfältig vom Laternenpfahl vor dem Geschäft entfernt wurde und eine neue, sichere Heimat im Trockenen gefunden hat - im Schaufenster! Was eine glückliche Überraschung - Strickbomben werden bekanntlich nicht immer so behandelt (siehe Knitty Graffity).

All my previous tags are still where I originally put them, so I decided to be a little more daring this time and add a label - it might lead a few more people to this blog. FIVE tags tonight, the occasion is self-explanatory and, as usual, the elements were against me.

Grosse Erklärungen erübrigen sich, oder? Ich hab's vor einem awo-Bücherladen aufgehängt.It was brass monkeys this evening - I really must chose better weather for this hobby.
Ja, das sind Schneeflocken im Foto - ich muss mir echt förderlicheres Wetter zum Strickbombardieren aussuchen.

It's a reminder to myself just as much as it's a message to passers-by. I spend so much of my free time knitting that other activities are seriously neglected. I have just read the Yarn Harlot's "The Secret Life of a Knitter", but it's a book about yarn for goodness sake! Really must get some paper between my fingers instead of wool occasionally. There's plenty to get through - this little selection is waiting on my bedside table:

Wrapping up warm / Wärmende Strickware

The deed is done! My first foray into yarn bombing is complete. My accomplice took photos of the Strickbombe at work and not one of the passers-by said a word. To start with, I was shaking a bit because of the nerves, later I was shivering because of the cold. Not my best seaming ever, I really need to work on my lettering and the bumble bee was far too wide, although I am quite pleased with the crocheted wings. So let's see how long the first assault lasts, which would, of course, mean that someone would have to actually notice the wool first. Anyway, I have lots of ideas for more.

Die Strickbombe hat zugeschlagen! Mein erster Streifzug wurde von meinem Komplizen fotografisch festgehalten während ich grossenteils von Passanten ignoriert wurde. Ich habe ein wenig gezittert - zuerst wegen Nerven, dann wegen der Kälte. Ich hab' schon schönere Nähte gesehen, ich muss an meiner mehrfarbigen Techniken arbeiten und die Biene war viel zu breit, aber die gehäckelten Flügel sind ganz niedlich. Naja, mal schauen, wie lange die Bomben da bleiben. Was natürlich voraussetzt, dass die jemanden überhaupt auffallen.... Auf jeden Fall habe ich ganz viele Ideen für weitere wollige Anschläge.

Before I go anywhere with this blog, I have to tip my hat to the ladies behind Yarn Bombing. This is the book (and website) that is the playful cat to my large stash of wool. So if anything goes wrong, it's THEIR fault.

Now that that's sorted out, I'm off to build an arsenal.

Bevor ich mit der eigenen Kram beginne, muss ich zuerst meinem Hut vor den Damen bei Yarn Bombing ziehen. Ihr Buch und die Webseite haben mich überhaupt auf diese Idee gebracht. Bin ich dadurch aus dem Schneider?

Da das jetzt geklärt ist, werden nun Bomben gestrickt.

Casting on / Maschen anschlagen

As a New Year's Resolution, I've decided to take my knitting to the next level. I've knitted (and crocheted) for friends and relatives, I've knitted (and crocheted) for the house, now it's time to knit (and crochet) for the public: Yarn Bombing! Having only resolved to do this on December 31, 2009, I have little to show just yet, but there is always something on the needles. I'd like to see whether I have something to contribute to the world of blogging and/or yarn. I have a feeling that this project will definitely teach me a thing or two. Like intarsia! Or how tolerant the locals are in this part of the world (not much yarn bombing around here so far).

Silvester habe ich einen Entschluss gefasst: mein Stricken wird sich ändern. Ich habe bisher für meine Familie und Freunde gestrickt (und gehäkelt), für die Wohnung (eine sehr dankbare Abnehmer meiner Kreationen), und nun will ich für die Öffentlichkeit stricken (und häkeln). Das ganze nennt sich Yarn Bombing (oder gesricktes Graffiti). Da ich mich erst gestern Abend dazu entschlossen habe (31. Dezember 2009), habe ich noch nichts was ich vorweisen kann, aber es gibt immer was auf die Nadeln. Ich möchte auch sehen, ob ich was zum Blog-Universum oder zur Woll-Welt beizutragen habe. Ganz sicher werde ich selber viel dabei lernen. Neue Strickmethoden zum Beispiel. Oder die Toleranzgrenze der Einheimischen (bisher sind sie wenig gestricktes Graffiti ausgesetzt worden).
